Worlds and planes of mystic origin, listen to these words of declaration. Though magic is a vitality of the world, it is also a resource waiting to be used to its fullest. Our founders were survivors of a great schism, and in defiance had forged the first of our tradition against those who wish us ruin. Built upon these olden lands, we sought only innovation and prosperity amongst our proud unity. Our fellowship, becoming something greater as we craft the likes of magic and iron to our very foundation. Through battle and strife forged our very steel and burning passion, our very pride in our strong thriving Nation! Know us as the Nation of Heart and Steel, Ferros! As our hearts are as strong as our steel! We will forever continue to forge for a more prosperous future for all!

Ferros is a prosperous nation within the world of Aether Chronicles. Built upon what was once known as the "Zemliya Peninsula" of the Old World, it was first founded by exiled Magi during the Great Schism, and what was originally a small faction of people that eventually became the large proud nation that's known today.

Geography

The Zemliya Peninsula is known for its vast valleys and mountain ranges, with landmarks rich in cultural history tied to native Zemliyan draconic clans. The mountainous regions hold large deposits of minerals, metals, and mana crystals, making the land incredibly valuable to those with the knowledge and means to extract them.

Notable mountain landmarks include:

  • Crucible Mountains — The largest mountain range spanning much of the peninsula's interior, rich in ore and mana crystal deposits.
  • Thunder Rod Mountain — A towering peak known for perpetual storms and a high concentration of lightning-aspected mana crystals.
  • Drakkenspear Crags — Jagged peaks with deep cultural significance to the Zemliyan draconic clans, said to be where the great drakes once roosted.
  • Uran Peak — A remote and treacherous summit, home to some of the rarest mineral deposits on the peninsula.

Ferros also holds territories beyond the mainland peninsula:

  • Cinkov Province borders the Crannlann highlands to the northeast.
  • Bronz Province borders the Khanri Steppe, extending toward the Eastern Kingdoms of Homa.
  • Alumin Province holds territory in Northern Sekhem to the south.
  • Various islands dot the western coast, serving as naval outposts and trade waypoints.

The Provinces

Ferros is divided into nine provinces, split between the Western and Eastern halves of the peninsula. Each province is led by a noble head and carries its own distinct identity, culture, and contribution to the nation.

Western Provinces

The western provinces form the political and cultural heartland of Ferros, home to the capital and the nation's most prominent institutions.

Platina Province

Head: Brunhilde Von Platina

Platina is the capital and neutral province of Ferros. It houses the City of Mantle, also known as the City of Rails, which serves as the seat of national governance and the hub of the nation's extensive railway network. As the capital province, Platina acts as neutral ground for inter-province politics and diplomacy, with Brunhilde Von Platina overseeing its administration.

Geld Province

Head: Claudia Ann Geld

Geld is the centralmost and only landlocked province in Ferros, and it is the most militarized. It is home to the Anvil Military Academy, the premier institution for training Ferros's soldiers, officers, and military strategists. Under the leadership of Claudia Ann Geld, the province maintains a culture of discipline, duty, and martial excellence.

Zilver Province

Head: Julius Zilver

Known as the "Crossroad" of the West, Zilver Province sits at a crucial junction of trade routes and is a hub for education and intellectual pursuit. Julius Zilver, a mage himself, serves as the current acting diplomat for the nation, making this province a center of both learning and foreign relations.

Kobber Province

Head: Charlotte Ada Kobber — the "Maiden of Steamcraft"

The northwestern province of Kobber is home to the Pioneer's College of Invention and is recognized as the birthplace of Steamcraft. Charlotte Ada Kobber, affectionately known as the Maiden of Steamcraft, has championed the development and proliferation of steam-based technology throughout Ferros and beyond. The province is a hotbed of innovation, attracting inventors, engineers, and tinkerers from across the nation.

Alumin Province

Head: Aurvandil Roe Alumin

The southwestern province of Alumin is known as the "Seafarer's Haven" and serves as the home base for Ferros's naval military forces. The province's extensive coastline and island territories make it the nation's primary maritime power. Its head, Aurvandil Roe Alumin, is a figure of some mystery — there are persistent rumors that he may be a vampire, though this has never been officially confirmed.

Eastern Provinces

The eastern provinces are rugged, diverse, and often defined by their proximity to neighboring lands and cultures.

Wolfram Province

Head: Emilian Witek Wolfram

Wolfram is the most industrialized province in all of Ferros, its landscape dominated by factories, foundries, and workshops. It also carries the deepest anti-Magi sentiment of any province, with many of its people favoring purely mechanical and industrial solutions over magical ones. Emilian Witek Wolfram presides over a province that is as productive as it is ideologically rigid.

Bronz Province

Head: Amelia Erzsebet Bronz

The easternmost province of Ferros, Bronz is known for its strong sense of honor and its thriving mercantile activity. Bordering the Khanri Steppe and the Eastern Kingdoms of Homa, it has a significant population of Homan natives and serves as a major hub for cross-cultural trade. Amelia Erzsebet Bronz leads the province with an emphasis on honorbound traditions and commercial prosperity.

Kobalt Province

Kobalt is the southeastern province and the most rural in Ferros. Despite — or perhaps because of — its pastoral nature, it possesses a rich cultural history tied to the land and its people. The province's traditions run deep, and its contributions to the nation are rooted in agriculture, craftsmanship, and the preservation of Ferrosian heritage.

Cinkov Province

Cinkov is the northeastern province, bordering the Crannlann highlands. It is the coldest and harshest province in Ferros, with brutal winters and unforgiving terrain. Despite these conditions — or perhaps forged by them — Cinkov is arguably the strongest province in terms of the resilience and hardiness of its people. Its warriors are legendary for their endurance.

Zemliya Lands

The indigenous tribes of the Zemliya Peninsula are collectively known as the Zemliyan people. With deep ancestral ties to the land and its draconic heritage, many Zemliyan tribes joined Ferros willingly over the centuries, while others were subjugated during the nation's expansion. The relationship between Ferros and the Zemliyan people remains complex and, in some regions, contentious.

The Zemliyan people speak of the "Earth King", a figure of great cultural and possibly spiritual significance. Whether the Earth King is a historical ruler, a mythological figure, or something else entirely varies between the tribes and their oral traditions.

Magitech & Steamcraft

Ferros is renowned for its dual technological traditions: Magitech and Steamcraft. Both are integral to the nation's identity, military, and economy.

Magitech

Magitech in Ferros is built upon the use of mana crystals and thaumatic engravings — magical inscriptions etched into materials to imbue them with arcane function. This technology blends magic and engineering into devices, weapons, infrastructure, and more.

Affinity regulations for Magitech:

  • Positive affinities (e.g., Light, Life, Fire, etc.) are common and widely used in Ferrosian Magitech.
  • Negative affinities (e.g., Death, Darkness, etc.) are regulated and require authorization for use.
  • Opposing affinities are strictly prohibited in Magitech applications due to the inherent instability and danger they pose.

Mages and Craftsmen who master both disciplines can become Artificers, a highly respected class within Ferrosian society. Artificers are the backbone of Ferros's technological advancement, responsible for creating and maintaining the nation's most important Magitech devices.

Steamcraft

Steamcraft is the alternative to magic-based technology, developed primarily in Kobber Province. Rather than relying on mana crystals or arcane power, Steamcraft utilizes steam pressure, mechanical engineering, and combustion to achieve similar — and sometimes unique — results.

Steamcraft applications include:

  • Automated structures — Buildings and facilities with steam-powered mechanisms for manufacturing, defense, and daily life.
  • Locomotives — The backbone of Ferros's famous railway network, connecting the provinces and enabling rapid transport of goods and people.
  • Warforged — Steam-powered constructs used in military and industrial roles (see Military section below).

Steamcraft is a relatively newer technology compared to Magitech, but its adoption has been rapid, particularly in provinces with anti-Magi sentiment like Wolfram. It represents Ferros's commitment to innovation through multiple avenues, not solely reliant on magic.

The Ferrosian Military

The Ferrosian military is one of the most formidable fighting forces in Aether Chronicles, combining conventional warfare with Magitech and Steamcraft innovations.

Ironwall Military Base

The primary military installation of Ferros, Ironwall Military Base is constructed entirely of metal, steamwork, and Magitech. It serves as the central command for the nation's armed forces and houses the bulk of its advanced military hardware.

Magitech Weapons

Ferrosian soldiers are equipped with weapons enhanced through thaumatic engravings and mana crystal integration. These range from enchanted melee weapons to more complex devices that channel magical energy offensively and defensively.

Firearms

Ferros employs single-shot firearms in its military. These weapons are governed by the 30 second rule — after firing a single shot, the weapon requires approximately 30 seconds to reload and prepare for the next shot. This limitation shapes Ferrosian combat tactics significantly, emphasizing the importance of the first shot and the ability to transition to melee or other forms of combat during reload periods.

Steam-Tanks

Heavily armored, steam-powered vehicles used for battlefield dominance. Steam-Tanks are rolling fortresses capable of both absorbing and dealing tremendous punishment on the field.

Railway Cannons

The Railway Cannons are considered super weapons within the Ferrosian arsenal. These massive artillery pieces are mounted on the national railway system, allowing them to be transported and deployed across the nation with relative speed. Most devastating of all, Railway Cannons can fire shells imbued with opposing affinity energy — the very type of magic that is otherwise prohibited. The destructive potential of an opposing affinity shell is catastrophic, making Railway Cannons weapons of last resort and strategic deterrence.

Warforged

Warforged are steam-powered and/or Magitech-enhanced golems used by the Ferrosian military. They come in two primary types:

  • Assault Warforged — Designed for offensive operations, these constructs are built for frontline combat, breaching fortifications, and overwhelming enemy positions.
  • Suppression Warforged — Built for defensive and control operations, Suppression Warforged are deployed to hold positions, manage crowds, and contain threats.

Manufacturing Restrictions

All Ferrosian military machinery — including Steam-Tanks, Railway Cannons, and Warforged — is limited to Ferros manufacture. The designs, techniques, and materials required for their construction are closely guarded national secrets, ensuring that Ferros maintains its technological and military edge.
